KEDE municipal governance and autonomy initiatives

Overview

The Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) is preparing for its Annual Ordinary Conference in Kalamata, scheduled for November 5–7, 2026. Under the theme ‘Strong Municipalities – Strong Local Communities – Strong Greece’, the conference will focus on the implementation of the new Local Government Code and the pursuit of administrative and financial autonomy for municipalities.

In preparation for the congress, the KEDE Digital Governance Committee held its first session outside of Athens in Larissa. This meeting, chaired by Larissa Mayor Thanasis Mamakos, addressed the integration of Artificial Intelligence into local operations and municipal cybersecurity.

KEDE continues to advocate for increased financial resources, proper costing of municipal responsibilities, and dedicated funding for energy, water management, climate resilience, housing, and social welfare.
