Kenyan lawyers court boycott faces legal challenge

Overview

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) launched a one‑day, nationwide court‑boycott on 22 July 2026 to pressure the judiciary over alleged misconduct and delays. Lawyers largely complied, calling for case adjournments, transfers or recusals of judges accused of obstructing anti‑corruption probes. The protest coincided with the arrest of a magistrate suspected of taking a bribe, and LSK warned it would target senior officials, including the Supreme Court president, for alleged interference.

In the days that followed, LSK expanded the boycott to senior judges, naming Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu and other senior judicial officers. On 27 July 2026, Advocate Adrian Kamotho petitioned Kenya’s High Court for a conservatory order to halt the boycott, arguing that it breaches the constitution, denies litigants access to justice and threatens the rule of law. Legal commentators cautioned that the escalating bench‑bar standoff could erode public confidence and investor trust, urging dialogue and conciliation to resolve the dispute without further disrupting court operations.
