Ketapang-Gilimanuk ferry crossing logistics congestion

Overview

The Bali Strait ferry crossing, specifically the Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi heading toward Gilimanuk, has experienced significant logistics truck congestion.

In late September 2026, a surge in vehicle volume led to queues reaching up to 8.5 kilometers. PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) reported that truck crossings rose from 1,699 on a Sunday to 2,223 by Tuesday, with a total of 6,082 trucks crossing between September 27 and 29. Operational delays were further compounded by low tide conditions at Gilimanuk Port, which hindered vessel docking and cargo handling.

By early September, congestion had previously peaked at approximately 16 kilometers before decreasing to 7 kilometers. To manage these surges, ASDP implemented measures such as optimizing vessel operations and utilizing a ‘arrive-unload-depart’ (TBB) pattern with six vessels to accelerate loading and unloading processes. The company has focused on increasing transport capacity through the operation of 24 large-capacity ships to ensure the crossing remains functional.
