Kidnapping rescues and security operations in Nigeria

Overview

Security operations in Nigeria have resulted in the rescue of kidnapping victims in Imo and Ondo States.

In Imo State, the Department of State Services, in coordination with local vigilantes and other agencies, rescued a 29-year-old man in the Orlu Local Government Area. The victim had been abducted near the Afor-Ogidi Market with a ransom demand of ₦15 million. During the intelligence-led operation in the Ihioma Community, security forces neutralized two suspected syndicate members and recovered ammunition and high-calibre weapons.

In Ondo State, police and security networks including Amotekun launched an ambush in Isua-Akoko following intelligence regarding a ransom collection. During the operation, armed suspects opened fire on security personnel, but operatives successfully rescued two victims unhurt. Authorities recovered ₦1.5 million in suspected ransom money and arrested three suspects following follow-up operations. Following these events, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa issued a 14-day ultimatum for criminals to vacate forest reserves.

Broader police crackdowns across several states have led to further arrests. In Delta State, nine suspected cultists were apprehended in Obiaruku and Issele-Ikpitime, with authorities recovering locally fabricated firearms and illicit drugs. In Akwa Ibom, six suspects were arrested in connection with a motorcycle theft network. In Ogun State, police foiled a robbery at a student hostel, recovering eleven iPhones and a laptop. Additionally, in Anambra, seven suspects were arrested following a kidnapping attempt that involved the theft of ₦7 million from a victim’s bank account.
