Kinsey Institute studies on singlehood and sexual trends
Overview
Research from the Kinsey Institute has identified shifting patterns in romantic and sexual engagement among adults. An initial nationwide study of nearly 5,000 single adults in the United States found a rising trend in “intentional singlehood,” with approximately one in four participants willing to reject an ideal partner to remain single. Many respondents reported improved well-being, including higher self-confidence and lower stress levels, compared to previous relationships.
Subsequent research focusing on Generation Z identified a “sexual recession” among young adults aged 18 to 29. While 74% of single participants reported moderate to very high sexual desire, nearly 30% had no sexual partner in the previous three months. The study suggests this decline is driven by economic and social factors rather than lack of interest, with 43% citing economic concerns as a barrier to dating. In Spain, housing challenges were noted as a contributing factor, with 67.1% of young people living with parents due to resource scarcity.
A more recent study of 2,373 young adults aged 18 to 29 reinforces these findings regarding declining sexual activity. This research found that one-third of respondents had no sexual partner in the previous three months, and 19% reported having never had a sexual partner. The Kinsey Institute notes that despite this trend, many respondents maintain moderate to high levels of sexual desire and that the decrease in activity does not necessarily indicate personal distress or well-being issues.
