Kirk Franklin personal and professional developments

Overview

Gospel artist Kirk Franklin has recently addressed personal and professional challenges. In interviews, he discussed a “very painful” estrangement from his mother, Debra Jones, regarding his biological paternity. Despite DNA tests confirming Richard Hubbard as his biological father, Franklin stated that Jones continues to deny the results.

Franklin also defended his ministry approach following social media backlash for leading prayers for R&B artists such as Chris Brown, Usher, and Mario. Responding to critics, he explained that as a “messenger,” he must sometimes meet people where they are, even if the process is “messy” or unconventional.

On October 24, 2026, Franklin released his first-ever double album, ‘I AM WHAT I AM’. The project, released via Fo Yo Soul Recordings, TRIBL Records, and Uptown Records, is divided into two distinct experiences: seven studio tracks and seven live recordings from a church setting. The album features collaborations with artists including GloRilla, Tobe Nwigwe, and Jelly Roll, and serves as a reflection of his personal journey with anxiety and depression.

Marking three decades in the industry, Franklin emphasized his commitment to traditional Black gospel elements like choirs and Hammond organs. Addressing past criticisms regarding his sincerity, he asserted a newfound sense of self-acceptance, stating, “Whatever you think of me, whatever your view is, good, bad, or ugly, I am what I am.” He further noted that while forgiveness is a commandment, he believes trust must be earned on its own timeline.
