Knife attack on police officers in Toulouse

Overview

On August 10, municipal police officers in Toulouse were attacked with knives while patrolling near Rue d'Austerlitz. One officer sustained a neck wound, while another was protected by a bulletproof vest that sustained significant damage. The officers were treated at Rangueil University Hospital and were expected to recover.

Initial reports from city officials suggested a possible terrorist motive because the suspect reportedly shouted religious slogans. This prompted an investigation by the Direction of Counter-Espionage and Special Operations.

Subsequent investigations identified the suspect as a 30-year-old Italian national. Authorities determined the attack was not motivated by radicalization but by severe psychiatric issues, as the suspect claimed to be hearing voices. He was apprehended using tear gas and remains in custody facing investigation for the attempted murder of persons holding public authority.
