Kolkata billboard removal investigation
Overview
An investigation is underway in Kolkata regarding a clash on August 27 involving the removal of an allegedly unauthorized billboard from the Camac Street office of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Initially, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien appeared at the Shakespeare Sarani police station for questioning after receiving a summons. Legal representatives for Abhishek Banerjee raised concerns that the First Information Report (FIR) had not been made available on the city police website.
As the investigation progressed, three separate FIRs were registered by officers from the Shakespeare Sarani and Park Street police stations, as well as a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official. Sumit Roy, an aide to Abhishek Banerjee, has been summoned for multiple rounds of questioning to address these complaints.
Parallel to the police investigation, the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Department conducted an audit of the premises, subsequently ordering the evacuation of the seventh and eighth floors due to inadequate fire-safety measures.
