Konya culinary heritage festivals and symposiums

Overview

The 4th Konya GastroFest has concluded after attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from Konya and other regions. Organized by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality at the Kalehan Ecdad Bahçesi, the event was designed to promote the city’s culinary heritage, ranging from the Çatalhöyük era to Seljuk and Mevlevi traditions.

Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, who visited the site on the final day to meet with local tradespeople and citizens, expressed satisfaction with the high level of participation. He noted that the festival is expanded annually to preserve and showcase Konya’s millennia-old culinary culture to the world. Earlier in the event, Governor İbrahim Akın highlighted that the city possesses 91 products with Geographical Indication. The festival featured 170 stands, workshops by famous chefs, tastings, and the presentation of Vefa Awards to tradesmen for preserving traditional flavors.

Following the festival, the 4th International Cook Dede Ateşbaz-ı Veli Symposium was held in Konya. Organized by the Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Tourism with support from the Konya Metropolitan Municipality, the symposium brought together scientists and prominent figures to discuss culinary culture, Sufism, and the Mevlevi tradition. The event featured the presentation of 82 papers focused on the historical importance of Ateşbaz Veli in Turkish and global gastronomy. The symposium sought to preserve the spiritual and cultural heritage of Ateşbaz Veli, who is noted as the only individual in the world with a memorial tomb dedicated in his name within the Mevlevi tradition.
