Overview
Kosovo is facing significant environmental challenges related to mining and quarrying activities. In August 2026, the Environmental Inspectorate halted operations at seven quarries for violating legal and environmental regulations, following a verification process that began in March. Acting Minister of Environment Fitore Pacolli reported that 16 quarries had their work suspended in August alone after an external commission found many operators failed to meet legal criteria.
Beyond current regulatory enforcement, long-term environmental risks persist due to decades of mining waste accumulation. Near the Trepça complex, including areas such as Mitrovica, Kishnica, Artana, and Zveçan, waste deposits pose threats to soil, water, and air. Reports indicate that heavy metals, such as lead and zinc, have impacted groundwater and rivers, with soil concentrations in some Mitrovica areas reaching up to 35 times above permitted standards.
