Kosovo police restrictions on cultural and religious figures

Overview

Kosovo police have engaged in recent actions involving the restriction of cultural and religious activities. In late July, Serbian singer Milan Vasić was summoned for an informational interview prior to a performance at the Monastery of the Holy Archangels. Police provided Vasić with a written list of prohibited content, stating he could not perform songs mentioning Metohija or using national symbols in a negative context. Vasić reported, “they told me I may not sing any song that mentions Metohija,” and subsequently adjusted his repertoire for the event, which proceeded without incident despite a visible police presence.

In mid-August, authorities detained Elvedin Peziq, a Bosnian Islamic preacher, in Vitomirica near Peja. The detention occurred ahead of a book promotion event. Police questioned Peziq regarding whether he possessed permission from the Islamic Community of Kosovo to hold the activity. Following the initial detention, Peziq was transferred to a station in Pristina for identity verification and investigation.
