Kosovo-Serbia ethnic and political tensions
Overview
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has addressed several issues regarding ethnic relations and political structures in the region. Initially, Kurti met with representatives from Albanian communities in Preševo, Bujanovac, Medveđa, and Sandžak to discuss what he described as “systemic discrimination” in areas such as employment, law enforcement, and language access. To support these communities, the Kosovo government established a four million euro budget line and implemented measures for healthcare and professional licensing.
Following these discussions, tensions emerged regarding the proposed Association of Serbian Municipalities (ASM). Kurti rejected the formation of the association in its current form, arguing that it must operate within the framework of the Republic of Kosovo and that a mono-ethnic structure would contradict the constitution. Serbian official Petar Petković criticized this stance, stating that the ASM is a “binding obligation” under previous agreements and called on the European Union to ensure compliance.
