KPK investigation into Pemalang extortion case
Overview
Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) supervisory board initially announced plans to examine police officer Setya Budi Dias, an administrative staff member at the KPK, regarding an alleged extortion scheme involving Pemalang regent Anom Widiyantoro.
Following a July 28, 2026, sting operation that resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals, investigations identified two extortion clusters. One involved the Regent and an associate, while the other involved Setya Budi Dias and his father, Lilik Budi Suprianto, who allegedly used leaked investigative information to extort the Regent.
The KPK later declined to pursue ethical sanctions against Dias, stating that because he is no longer an official member of the commission, the matter falls outside the jurisdiction of the KPK’s ethics enforcement or Supervisory Board. In response to the incident, the agency is evaluating its administrative processes to prevent further leaks of investigative information.
