Krosno Airport expansion and modernization

Overview

The city of Krosno has initiated a project to expand and modernize the Krosno Airport, with estimated costs ranging between 44.4 million and 45.19 million PLN. The expansion is intended for dual civil and military use, specifically designed to serve as a backup facility for the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport in the event of emergencies or infrastructure damage.

Technical upgrades include extending the runway to 2,000 meters and widening sections to 45 meters to accommodate larger aircraft, such as C-130 Hercules military planes. The project also involves improving taxiways, lighting, drainage, and water installations, as well as installing radar and anti-drone systems.

In addition to transport security, the initiative aims to support the aviation and drone technology sectors. This includes the launch of an autonomous 5G network in collaboration with the State Academy of Applied Sciences in Krosno to support a Drone Competence Center. The local government has also signed letters of intent with Territorial Defense Forces (WOT) brigades to utilize the facility for drone operator training. Authorities have noted that the site is not intended for regular civilian passenger flights or permanent military basing.
