Kuching hosting 2026 Malaysia Day celebrations

Kuching has been selected to host the 2026 Malaysia Day celebrations at the Borneo Kuching Convention Centre (BCCK). In preparation, the Malaysian government is organizing follow-up meetings and providing 24-hour public transportation services on August 30 and 31. The Malaysian Information Department is also launching patriotic initiatives, such as the ‘1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang’ campaign.

As the event approaches, Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, stated that official preparations will commence on September 11, 2026, with rehearsals leading up to the main event on September 16.

The main ceremony on September 16 is expected to host approximately 5,000 guests at the BCCK. The program will feature addresses by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Key activities include the signing of the Malaysia Day Special Book, the recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge, and musical performances by artists including Dayang Nurfaizah, Stacy, and Faizal Tahir.

Complementary festivities include a fireworks display at the Kuching Waterfront near the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex. Exhibitions are scheduled at Plaza Merdeka from September 10 to 16, alongside mini exhibitions across 10 divisions in Sarawak. Religious thanksgiving ceremonies are also set for September 14 and 15 in Kuching. While Sarawak serves as the primary host, proposed celebration locations outside the state include Sabah and Putrajaya.
