Kumamoto earthquake response in Japan

Overview

A magnitude‑7 quake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28‑29, 2026, prompting a wave of international condolences. Leaders from South Korea, Italy, France and the European Commission publicly expressed solidarity with Japan and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung praised Takaichi’s leadership, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated she “keeps her heart with all those affected and with the brave rescuers.”

In the days that followed, Japanese opposition parties mobilised domestically. The National Democratic Party held a rally in Tokyo, raising funds and calling for a permanent cut to the consumption tax on food. Simultaneously, the Constitutional Democratic Party, Center Reform Union and Komeito met in the Diet, planning coordinated relief efforts, regional meetings and joint policy positions on security and energy to support the quake‑affected communities.

By mid-August, recovery efforts remained a central political issue. During a Standing Executive Committee meeting, Constitutional Democratic Party leader Shunichi Mizuoka noted that three weeks after the earthquake, some residents still lacked access to running water and faced difficult evacuation conditions. The party has since emphasized the necessity for disaster-resilient urban planning and policies to protect livelihoods during emergencies.
