Kyle McCord movement between Packers and Dolphins

The Green Bay Packers underwent several positional competitions during their preseason and training camp. Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed the conclusion of the third quarterback position battle following the release of Kyron Drones, leaving Kyle McCord as a primary focus after a strong preseason performance.

Following his preseason success, McCord was traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick. The Packers made the move to avoid losing McCord via waivers or maintaining three quarterbacks on the active roster after signing veteran Tyrod Taylor. The trade connects the two franchises through Miami’s general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, and head coach, Jeff Hafley, both of whom have previous ties to Green Bay.

This transaction was part of a series of quarterback trades as NFL teams finalized 53-man rosters. To acquire McCord, the Dolphins previously traded quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round pick. McCord joins Miami to serve as a backup to Malik Willis, who also recently transitioned from the Packers roster.

McCord, a 23-year-old in his second NFL season, previously played for Ohio State and Syracuse, where he led the NCAA in passing yards with 4,779. His decision to join Miami was reportedly influenced by his preseason performance with Green Bay, where he recorded a 102.4 passer rating. The Dolphins' 2026 roster reflects a significant shift toward youth, featuring 27 players with less than two years of experience.

To address the vacancy left by McCord, the Packers signed Kedon Slovis to their practice squad to provide depth behind starter Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor.
