Kyrgyzstan economic growth and development

Overview

Kyrgyzstan has demonstrated significant economic expansion and fiscal improvement. Recent data from the Eurasian Development Bank indicates that public debt has fallen to 37.5 percent of GDP, supported by a budget surplus of 7.3 percent during the first seven months of 2026. This stability led Moody’s to upgrade the country’s sovereign credit rating from B3 to B2.

Growth has been driven by domestic demand, construction, industry, and infrastructure projects, with GDP increasing by 11.1 percent in the first seven months of 2026. To sustain this momentum, the government has established a National Development Program through 2030. This program targets an average annual real GDP growth of at least 8 percent and a 20 percent annual increase in foreign direct investment.

The strategy focuses on expanding export-oriented industries—such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and mineral processing—and modernizing trade procedures. Infrastructure remains a priority, notably through the $4.7 billion China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway project. Additionally, foreign trade in goods reached $12 billion between January and August 2026, with an 18.2 percent increase in trade with countries outside the Eurasian Economic Union.
