La Guaira earthquake recovery
Overview
Following a devastating double earthquake consisting of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors off the coast of La Guaira, Venezuela, intensive rescue operations were launched in Playa Grande. The seismic events caused the partial and total collapse of several residential blocks within the Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi complex of the Gran Misión Vivienda Venezuela project.
Technical teams utilized specialized canine units, fiber optic cameras, and drilling tools to conduct search and rescue operations under the risk of aftershocks.
As recovery efforts progressed, authorities announced the partial reopening of approximately 80 percent of the state’s beaches, or about 55 locations, starting October 31, 2026. This reopening is restricted to weekends between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to allow for continued infrastructure rehabilitation and technical training. Certain areas, including Playa Coral, El Yate, and Puerto Viejo, remain closed for further recovery.
