La Plata municipal security and infrastructure debates
Overview
The Municipality of La Plata is undergoing developments regarding public security infrastructure and management. Officials have initiated a project to remodel the City Bell Urban Prevention Guard headquarters into an operational base for the Buenos Aires Provincial Police’s Fuerza Barrial de Aproximación (FBA). This $66,475,882 renovation includes administrative offices, dormitories, and a specialized armory.
Opposition members of the La Plata Deliberative Council have raised concerns regarding this project, specifically questioning security protocols and the chain of responsibility for the custody of weapons within a municipal building.
Parallel debates in the City Council have focused on broader security funding and the implementation of the city’s Integral Security Plan. Opposition representatives have criticized delays in the installation of surveillance cameras, noting that only 500 of a planned 1,200 cameras have been addressed following a 10.5 billion peso investment announcement. The ruling administration has defended its management and indicated that the second stage of the security plan will be presented in November.
