Labor and safety issues involving Indian workers in Croatia
Overview
Reports have emerged regarding the mistreatment of Indian workers in Croatia, involving both labor exploitation and hate-motivated violence.
In one instance, Zagreb-based entrepreneur Zoran Marijan has been accused of exploiting four Indian workers. The workers, employed by Linea Deana j. d. o. o., claim they were diverted from hospitality roles to perform private construction work. They reported being subjected to “inhumane living conditions,” including inadequate housing without consistent electricity, and allege that Marijan owes them approximately 10,000 euros in unpaid wages. A state inspection report noted various irregularities in Marijan’s business operations.
Separately, a Zagreb municipal criminal court convicted three individuals for a hate-motivated attack on six Indian workers in Ribnjak Park. The attackers, including a 19-year-old and two minors, physically assaulted the group with hands, feet, and belts, and threatened them with a knife. The perpetrators were found guilty of bringing the foreign workers into a “humiliating position out of hatred.”
