Labor and social welfare initiatives in Bosnia and Herz
Overview
In Sarajevo Canton, the Employment Service has allocated 108 million KM toward employment programs over the last five years, with 70 percent of funds directed to the real sector. Officials noted that while unemployment in the canton has decreased by approximately 5,000 people over three years, there are currently 18,000 active job seekers, more than half of whom are over the age of 50 due to youth emigration and declining birth rates.
At the federal level, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy has proposed 700,000 KM to co-finance 52 social protection programs. This funding includes approximately 289,547 KM for public kitchen projects in cities such as Sarajevo, Mostar, Zenica, and Travnik, as well as 150,453 KM for professional counseling and family support services. Additional allocations are designated for social entrepreneurship and community reintegration for individuals leaving institutional care.
