Labor disputes and financial scrutiny at Correos

The Spanish postal service, Correos, is facing operational challenges and scrutiny over its labor practices and expenditures. Labor unions, including CGT and CSIF, have warned of significant service disruptions caused by critical staff shortages. These shortages, attributed to unfilled retirements and summer vacations, have led to delays in delivering administrative notifications, judicial notices, and hospital appointments. The CSIF union has claimed the service is operating ‘at its limit’ and has alleged that a 2024 framework agreement regarding work hours and contract conversions is not being honored, prompting planned protests in September.

Concurrently, financial data revealed by the CGT union indicates that Correos spent over 5.7 million euros on legal fees and fines between 2022 and 2025. This includes approximately 4.2 million euros for legal assistance from the Abogacía General del Estado and over 837,000 euros in fines related to Labor Inspection sanctions and health and safety non-compliance. Unions have criticized these costs, suggesting funds are being used to defend against labor conflicts instead of improving working conditions. Despite these issues, Correos reported a provisional profit of 14.4 million euros for 2025, marking a recovery from a 94 million euro loss in 2024.
