Labor disputes and rights protests in Yucatán and QuintanaR
Overview
Labor unrest and disputes regarding worker rights and payments have emerged in the Yucatán and Quintana Roo regions of Mexico.
In late August, transport workers and heavy machinery operators from Quintana Roo threatened strikes in Yucatán. The workers, seeking employment due to a construction sector crisis, reported they had not been paid since May for services provided at the Country Lakes real estate development in Sierra Papacal. They identified developers and contractors, including Boma Desarrollos, Sabco, and Country Lakes, as the parties responsible for the unpaid debts.
By mid-September, labor concerns expanded to include government employees. In Yucatán, the union representing state executive branch workers (Stspeidy) requested dialogue with the government to protest policies they claim violate labor rights, such as freezing career advancement and blocking promotions. Simultaneously, in Quintana Roo, political leaders raised concerns regarding “bureaucratic coercion,” alleging that government employees may have faced political pressure to participate in recent marches.
