Lagos hosting 2026 National Intermediate Games
Overview
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has selected Lagos State to host the inaugural National Intermediate Games, known as Eko 2026, from October 1 to October 15, 2026. Developed under the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), the games are designed to provide a structured pathway for athletes aged 15 to 18 to transition from grassroots participation to elite competition.
Lagos was chosen due to its existing sporting infrastructure and its proactive systems for integrating schoolchildren into high-performance sports. Planned venues include the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the National Stadium in Surulere, and the Elegbata Sports Complex. The event is expected to host between 14,000 and 15,000 young athletes competing in 23 compulsory and five optional sporting disciplines.
To address historical issues such as age cheating, organizers plan to implement biometric screening using the National Identity Management System (NIMS). Lekan Fatodu, Co-chair of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), noted that this would prevent over-aged athletes from competing against younger ones.
As preparations enter the final stages, a Joint Technical Committee meeting in Lagos recently approved measures for talent identification, logistics, accommodation, and medical services. To ensure competition integrity, officials confirmed that participation is strictly restricted to athletes born between January 1, 2008, and September 30, 2011. Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, described the Games as a “vital bridge” between grassroots and elite competition, commending the Lagos State Government for its commitment to the event.
