Lake Neusiedl boathouse fire

Overview

A massive fire at the Ruster Bucht on Lake Neusiedl destroyed approximately 200 boathouses and nearly the same number of electric boats and vessels. About 300 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was complicated by shifting winds but prevented from spreading to protected reed beds or residential areas.

Following the incident, investigators from the Burgenland State Criminal Investigation Office began working to determine the cause of the fire. The structures involved were primarily made of wood with metal roofs, resulting in enormous property damage. To mitigate environmental impact, an oil barrier was deployed in the lake to prevent debris and contaminants from polluting the water, and authorities have taken water quality samples to monitor the situation.
