Land Rover Discovery Sport phase‑out
Entities: Land Rover Discovery Sport · General Safety Regulation 2 · Martin Limpert · Jaguar Land Rover · Land Rover
Overview
In early July 2026 Land Rover launched a limited‑edition Discovery Landmark painted in exclusive Tasman Blue, signaling an effort to refresh the Discovery range. By the end of the month the company confirmed that production of the Discovery Sport will end in December 2026. The model, which peaked in 2016 with global sales of more than 122,000 units, had fallen to less than one‑tenth of that level by 2025, with the latest quarter showing a 49.3 % drop to 2,452 vehicles, making it the slowest‑selling JLR model.
The shutdown aligns with the EU’s General Safety Regulation 2, which requires advanced driver‑assistance features such as distraction‑warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection—technologies the aging Discovery Sport cannot accommodate without costly redesign. Order books have already been closed in France, Germany and Spain, while UK customers can still configure the vehicle until the end of the year.
JLR will continue producing the Range Rover Evoque and Velar and is re‑tooling its Halewood plant for the new Electrified Modular Architecture that will underpin upcoming electric models, including the Range Rover GT. The brand is also preparing a new Defender Sport, though it has not been presented as a direct replacement for the discontinued Discovery Sport.
