Latin American bridge construction disruptions
Entities: Rionegro, Colombia · Antioquia Department · Municipality of Comodoro Rivadavia · Ministerio de Transporte de Uruguay (Lucía Etcheverry) · Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (CONAVI)
Overview
In July, residents of Argentina and Peru protested the closure of local bridges, urging authorities to reopen the blocked crossings. Within weeks, municipal governments across Latin America launched a wave of road, traffic‑signal and bridge projects. In Argentina, cities such as Comodoro Rivadavia, San Juan and Buenos Aires carried out intersection upgrades, pothole repairs and bridge work that required partial or full road closures and detours. Similar construction activities were reported in Mexico’s Culiacán, Colombia’s Antioquia, Costa Rica’s Santo Domingo de Heredia and Uruguay’s railway bridge over the Río Negro. The combined effect was a region‑wide pattern of temporary traffic disruptions, reflecting a broader push to upgrade and maintain transport infrastructure after earlier local grievances about blocked bridges.
