Latin American healthcare infrastructure investments
Overview
Several Latin American nations are implementing significant investments to expand and modernize their healthcare infrastructure and medical services.
In Honduras, a $29 million modernization project for the Hospital Escuela is underway with support from the government and UNOPS. This initiative includes the construction of six high-complexity operating rooms for specialized procedures, such as neurosurgery and kidney transplants, and the acquisition of $7 million in specialized medical equipment.
In Paraguay, efforts to improve access include the inauguration of a new Family Health Unit in Potrero Angelito to serve rural communities. The Hospital General de Itapúa is also conducting a pediatric surgery marathon to address surgeon shortages. Furthermore, a 27 billion guaraní investment, funded through negotiations with Brazil, has been announced to expand the Hospital Regional de Caacupé with new intensive care units and specialized centers.
In Ecuador, the Ministry of Public Health has reported investments exceeding $41 million for the 2023-2026 period. These funds cover maintenance and works across 129 health establishments in 18 provinces, focusing on the rehabilitation of clinical areas, immunization zones, and universal accessibility.
