Latin American school nutrition and food security programs
Overview
Regional efforts to improve nutrition and food security have been highlighted through various local and international initiatives. In Venezuela, the Cocineras y Cocineros de la Patria held a state congress to evaluate nutritional plans for 1,200 schools under the National Plan Venezuela Alimenta Hambre Cero. Similarly, in Mexico, the Chihuahua State DIF invested over 600,000 pesos to provide kitchen equipment to school and community dining centers to support vulnerable populations.
On an international level, Chilean programs are receiving recognition. The “Del litoral a la escuela” initiative, which integrates artisanal seafood into school menus, was showcased at the Global Child Nutrition Forum in Zambia. Furthermore, at the XXI Latin American Congress of Nutrition in Santiago, experts discussed the legislative challenges regarding the right to food and compared Chilean food security laws with broader regional trends.
