Latin American small business and employment support

Overview

Regional governments and institutions in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia have launched various initiatives to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (Mipymes) and promote employment.

In Mexico, the Baja California state government allocated over 95.8 million pesos to support nearly 1,000 Mipymes through economic supports and credits. In Monterrey, the municipal government implemented the ‘Microcréditos, Emprende y Resuelve’ program, investing over 53 million pesos to provide zero-interest loans and training to thousands of families. Additionally, the Regia Plus card program provides bi-monthly payments to two thousand women to assist with household expenses.

In the Dominican Republic, the ‘Impulso Colonial’ program in Santo Domingo offers financing at an 8% annual interest rate, entrepreneur training, and assistance for business formalization. Meanwhile, Colombia’s Ministry of Labor introduced the ‘Crea Empleo’ strategy, which provides a subsidy equivalent to 25% of a monthly minimum wage for each new full-time worker hired by micro and small enterprises, with a focus on hiring youth, women, and adults over 50.
