Latin American sustainable agriculture initiatives

Overview

Representatives from 13 Latin American countries met in Panama to develop a roadmap, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), to decouple agricultural production from deforestation. The initiative focuses on nature-based solutions, government-led regularization, and new financing mechanisms to support commodities like coffee, cocoa, and livestock while maintaining forest cover.

Subsequent discussions involving officials from Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia centered on aligning public policy with private investment to meet international environmental standards. In Argentina, leaders noted that macroeconomic stability is a prerequisite for expanding investment in livestock. Meanwhile, in Colombia, the Expo Agrofuturo 2026 event addressed regional productivity gaps, noting that total factor productivity in Latin American agriculture grew by only 0.9% annually over the last decade.
