Latvia healthcare modernization and digitalization

Latvia is pursuing modernization of its healthcare system through digital transformation and regional infrastructure development.

Initial efforts focused on the Digital Health Center (LDVC) announcing a new e-Health portal intended to replace the current system. The portal, designed to be mobile-friendly, aims to provide personalized information regarding prescriptions, doctor appointments, and preventive examinations. A prototype was released for citizen testing to gather feedback on the interface.

Subsequent developments show a broader focus on regional healthcare accessibility and digital literacy. In the Kurzeme region, officials are working toward upgrading the North Kurzeme Regional Hospital to multi-profile status by 2027, including efforts to recruit medical professionals. In the Vidzeme region, the ‘DEAHL Baltic’ project will pilot a digital health literacy e-learning program at the Strenči Psychoneurological Hospital to assist medical staff in supporting patients through digital health services.
