Launch and political reception of Polgári Demokraták

Former minister Tibor Navracsics launched ‘Polgári Demokraták’ (Civic Democrats), a social initiative intended to address extreme political polarization in Hungary. Navracsics stated that current political divisions undermine national unity and the country’s ability to act, arguing that political revenge and the exclusion of opponents do not lead to a viable future.

Following the initial announcement, the initiative expanded its reach through the involvement of Orsolya Ferencz and the support of Gyula Porga, the mayor of Veszprém. Porga, a Fidesz-KDNP candidate, advocated for a ‘strong, modern, and authentic civic-conservative side’ and emphasized shifting the national focus from past conflicts toward cooperation and common goals. The movement has since established a website and a logo to facilitate its mission of fostering national dialogue.

As the movement gains traction, it has prompted speculation regarding potential fractures within the Fidesz party. Fidesz communications director Bertalan Havasi dismissed these claims, asserting that the party remains ‘completely unified and in excellent condition’ and characterizing the initiative as a personal endeavor of Navracsics and Ferencz that does not require official party authorization. However, some Fidesz politicians, including János Pócs, expressed concern that such movements could result in a ‘fragmentation of the right-wing political landscape.’ Navracsics maintained that the movement’s objective is to connect with voters directly rather than through political parties.
