Lebanon-Israel territorial dispute over border maps

Overview

Tensions have escalated between Lebanon and Israel following the publication of a map by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs that depicts large portions of southern Lebanon as Israeli territory.

Hezbollah and Lebanese MP Melhem Khalaf condemned the map, asserting it reveals Israeli ambitions over Lebanese land and resources. Hezbollah characterized the move as a political signal coinciding with military violations and accused the Israeli military of committing “environmental genocide” by destroying forests and infrastructure. The group has called for an emergency session of the Higher Defense Council and an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council.

Adding to the condemnation, the Independent Meeting for Lebanon described the map as a “blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty” and an attempt to demand territorial concessions. The organization noted that previous negotiations in Rome and Washington failed to secure Israeli withdrawals from key southern locations, such as Bint Jbeil and Naqoura, and expressed concern that Israel is attempting to establish a security buffer zone along the border.
