Lega party political activities in Italy

The Lega party has engaged in both national policy planning and local political conflict. In Rome, the party hosted a two-day summit titled ‘A tua difesa: verso la Finanziaria 2027’ to establish economic and social priorities for the 2027 budget. The summit involved over fifty speakers, including government ministers and regional leaders, to discuss topics such as fiscal policy, security, housing, and artificial intelligence.

Concurrently, at the local level, Lega representatives in Riccione launched a political attack against Mayor Daniela Angelini’s administration. Party officials described the local government as ‘practically paralyzed on everything’ following internal dissent over a project financing tender for the redevelopment of the Riccione port. Lega leaders claimed the local coalition is at a ‘breaking point’ due to project failures and internal crises.

Internal cohesion has become a central concern as the party approaches the Pontida gathering on September 20. Local administrators and leaders have called for greater collegiality and a stronger emphasis on Northern interests. Massimiliano Romeo, secretary of the Lega Lombarda, has advocated for a shift toward a more collective leadership approach, stating ‘less me and more us.’ While a temporary truce has been observed, internal tensions regarding management and leadership structure persist, leaving Matteo Salvini to navigate the party’s relationship with its original base.
