Legacy and recognition of Víctor Jara

The legacy of Chilean musician Víctor Jara has recently seen renewed attention through both cultural recognition and biographical research. The soundtrack for the Amazon Prime series ‘La casa de los espíritus’, which features Jara’s composition ‘Deja la vida volar’ reinterpreted by Manuel García, has been nominated for Best Music for Visual Media at the 2026 Latin Grammy Awards.

This recognition coincides with discussions regarding Jara’s life and historical impact. Biographical research by historian Mario Amorós has utilized Civil Registry documentation to clarify that Jara was born in Santiago on September 28, 1932, addressing previous debates that suggested he was born in Ñuble or Chillán Viejo.

Jara remains a significant symbol of the New Chilean Song Movement. His work is noted for reflecting the struggles of the working class and the resistance against repressive policies, a purpose he embraced following his travels to Cuba.

Recent cultural projects continue to commemorate his impact. To mark the 94th anniversary of his birth, Aula Records and the Víctor Jara Foundation have released a preview of ‘Víctor Jara, un canto libre’, a symphonic-choral production featuring ten of his fundamental works, with arrangements by Sergio ‘Tilo’ González performed by the Usach Symphony Orchestra and Choir. Additionally, the Compañía Teatro A-temporal is presenting ‘Víctor tiene sentido y razón. Concierto teatral para Víctor Jara’ in Valparaíso. Directed by René Rojas Escalona, this theatrical piece presents an imaginary concert that was prevented from occurring on September 11, 1973, due to the military coup in Chile, aiming to explore Jara’s historical memory and sociopolitical impact.
