Legal challenge to Ghanshyam Singh election

Overview

A legal challenge was filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court to nullify the election of Congress MLA Ghanshyam Singh from the Datia Assembly constituency. The petition, filed by BJP leader Deepak Belpatri, alleges that Singh failed to disclose a 1991 criminal case involving a protest following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in his election affidavit.

Ghanshyam Singh dismissed the allegations as a “conspiracy by political opponents,” noting the incident was approximately 35 years old.

Following the initial filing, the Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court issued a notice to Singh. Legal counsel for the petitioners, Manoj Upadhyay, alleged that Singh failed to disclose any of his four pending criminal cases during the 2023 elections and only disclosed two of the four cases during the 2026 Datia by-election. The petitioners are seeking the cancellation of Singh’s election if the allegations of concealing his criminal history are proven.
