Legal investigations into journalist Makarios Drousiotis

Cyprus police have launched a criminal investigation into journalist Makarios Drousiotis following complaints regarding potential personal data breaches. The probe, handled by the Criminal Investigation Department, concerns references made in Drousiotis’s book, ‘State Mafia’. Drousiotis has characterized the investigation as an attempt to “terrorise his collaborators” and an issue of freedom of expression.

As the legal situation expanded, Drousiotis appealed for public financial support to fund his defense. He reported facing 80 charges related to the ‘Sandis’ case involving allegations of publishing false news, alongside the investigation into his book. Drousiotis claims these legal actions are retaliatory efforts by the state to undermine his credibility as a witness in investigations involving real estate auctions and non-performing loans, describing the struggle as being “alone against this system”.

Recently, Drousiotis has disputed claims regarding digital evidence in the ongoing investigation. He addressed statements made by an individual known as ‘Santi’ concerning the origin of digital messages, asserting that the messages were provided to him via USB and printed copies rather than through his own devices. He expressed willingness to have his own devices examined to prove they contain no data regarding the messages' transmission. Drousiotis further alleged that ongoing examinations of digital material, funded by citizen donations, are beginning to contradict narratives presented by both the police and Santi. He criticized the police and the Legal Service, alleging they have chosen to pursue criminal charges against him instead of investigating the case properly.
