Legal proceedings against Marilyn N for medical impersonator

Marilyn N, also referred to as Marilyn Cote, is facing criminal proceedings in Puebla, Mexico, for allegedly impersonating a psychiatrist. The defendant is accused of professional usurpation, falsifying official documents, and the illegal prescription of controlled medications. One victim reported that unauthorized treatments involving high-dose antipsychotic medications between 2019 and 2020 caused side effects and exacerbated anxiety.

In September 2026, a judge in San Andrés Cholula denied a request to suspend the proceedings, ruling that the defendant must remain in preventive detention due to being a risk to public health. Although the defense attempted to reach reparatory agreements with six victims to allow for a conditional suspension, legal advisors for the affected parties argued that such an agreement would not guarantee the defendant would cease her unauthorized medical practices.

By late August 2026, it was confirmed that even after six victims granted legal pardons through reparatory agreements, Cote would remain in prison. The Attorney General of Puebla, Idamis Pastor Betancourt, stated that while those specific pardons extinguish criminal action for those cases, they do not nullify other active investigations. Cote faces additional federal proceedings regarding the alteration of official health and educational documentation and remains in detention at the Ciudad Serdán Women's Penitentiary.
