Legal proceedings against Venezuelan activists

Overview

In late 2026, legal proceedings against Venezuelan activists and journalists resulted in acquittals.

Human rights defender Carlos Correa, director of Espacio Público, regained full freedom after the Prosecutor’s Office requested the definitive closure of criminal proceedings. The decision annulled charges including terrorism financing, conspiracy, money laundering, and treason. Correa had been under precautionary measures since January 2025 following an arrest in Caracas.

Separately, journalist and activist Carlos Julio Rojas was acquitted by a terrorism jurisdiction court after a trial lasting over two years. Prosecutors stated there was no evidence to support charges of regicide and terrorism. While Rojas was cleared, two other individuals involved in the same case received four-year prison sentences for illegal possession of weapons. Rojas stated, “Today I can finally say that I am a free man.”
