Legality and environmental enforcement in Pantelleria

Overview

In mid-October 2026, authorities in Pantelleria initiated efforts to address legality and environmental protection on the island.

Enac Servizi and the Prefecture of Trapani signed a legality protocol to oversee infrastructure projects at Pantelleria Airport. This agreement, supported by the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA), aims to prevent organized crime infiltration in public tenders and ensure transparency throughout the 2025-2029 public works program. The protocol focuses on monitoring manpower flows, labor practices, and supply chain traceability.

Concurrently, Carabinieri Forestali officers reported two individuals for environmental violations in the Scauri area. Investigations revealed the illegal combustion of plastic and iron waste under the guise of burning agricultural residues. One individual was charged with the illegal combustion of special waste, while a second was reported for failing to remediate a polluted site and ignoring orders to remove a vehicle carcass within the Pantelleria National Park perimeter.
