Leopard sightings in Indian residential areas

Overview

In early August 2026, residents in Baramulla reported repeated sightings of at least two leopards in densely populated areas such as Microwave Colony, Kanlibagh, and Sangri. The animals reportedly preyed on sheep and were seen on the boundary walls of homes, causing significant concern for the safety of children and the elderly. Residents called for increased surveillance from the Wildlife Department.

By late August, a similar incident occurred in the Mahavir Nagar residential area of Rajsamand, Rajasthan. CCTV footage captured a leopard resting in the veranda of an empty house before fleeing toward bushes near Taleri Nala after being chased by a neighbor’s German Shepherd. In response, the forest department launched search operations in surrounding neighborhoods and advised residents to remain vigilant.
