Liberian political governance and party tensions

Political discourse in Liberia has been marked by criticisms of successive administrations and friction between opposition parties.

Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, former Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia, criticized both the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Unity Party (UP) for failing to address development and governance challenges. Nyan argued that political competition has devolved into a cycle of corruption accusations, stating that “the order of being corrupt and the other is in order of being corrupt.” He specifically noted that the current Unity Party administration under President Joseph Boakai has not demonstrated the fundamental improvements promised to the nation.

Simultaneously, tensions have emerged between the CDC and the National Patriotic Party (NPP). The CDC disputed claims by NPP Chairman George Mulbah regarding an opposition roundtable organized by former President George Weah. CDC Secretary-General Jefferson T. Koijee asserted that the NPP was never formally invited as an institution, characterizing the NPP's refusal to participate as “grandstanding and political posturing.”
