Lightning strike at Tosselilla amusement park

On 28 June 2026 a thunderstorm over southern Sweden produced a lightning bolt that struck Tosselilla Summerland (Sommarland) in Skåne. A 45‑year‑old woman was taken to Ystad hospital in critical condition, and nine other visitors – five children and four adults – sustained minor injuries, mainly from wood splinters when a fallen tree hit them. The park had already evacuated guests from rides and the water‑park pool and closed attractions after the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for dangerous weather across large parts of southern Sweden, citing thunderstorms and heavy rain. Falling branches and debris from the struck tree wounded the nearby group; two adults and five children sought medical assistance on their own, while two others were transported by ambulance.

The incident occurred amid a prolonged European heat wave that set record temperatures in Sweden (Osby 36.8 °C, Lund 36.3 °C, Malmö 35.1 °C) and across the continent, with unprecedented highs in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The World Health Organization reported roughly 1,300 excess heat‑related deaths in Europe since 21 June, and the World Weather Attribution network linked the extreme conditions to human‑driven climate change. Authorities warned that elderly and other vulnerable groups faced heightened risk.

Emergency services treated the nine injured, transporting the woman and two others by ambulance and providing on‑site care for the remaining injuries. Police were not called and no criminal investigation was opened; the park’s operations director confirmed the strike caused no fire and that only ambulances were dispatched. Local authorities emphasized continued safety monitoring. The site was secured and a temporary closure imposed for safety checks; after inspections the park reopened later that day. A Facebook post from Tosselilla Sommarland confirmed the incident and said it was being investigated.
