Liguria regional economic development
Overview
The Liguria region is positioning itself as a strategic hub for the blue economy and high-technology sectors. The ‘Liguria 2030’ report identified the maritime sector as a major economic driver, noting that Ligurian ports handle one-third of all TEUs in Italy and that the region hosts a significant portion of the national nuclear industry supply chain.
At the 66th Genoa International Boat Show, industry experts highlighted the broader national impact of this sector. Mario Zanetti, Special Advisor for Confindustria, stated that the maritime economy has surpassed 220 billion euros in added value, representing over 11% of Italy’s GDP. Zanetti identified three strategic priorities for future development: upgrading port infrastructure, investing in workforce skills, and technological fleet modernization.
Data from Bper Banca continues to underscore Liguria’s disproportionate contribution to these figures. The blue economy generates 13.8% of regional value added—significantly higher than the national average of 4%. Furthermore, the region’s ports, specifically Genoa and La Spezia, handle approximately 15.8% of Italy’s national goods, totaling roughly 76 million tons. To support this, Bper Banca maintains a specialized desk managing approximately 300 million euros to assist shipping, nautical, and port logistics companies with digital and sustainable transitions.
