Lima urban mobility and transport infrastructure projects

Overview

The Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) has implemented several infrastructure projects to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in Lima.

Initial efforts focused on a pilot program for a bidirectional bus lane on Arequipa Avenue. A survey of 1,152 citizens indicated 90% support for the measure, noting that travel times in a 1.5-kilometer stretch decreased from 19 minutes to 9 minutes during evening peak hours.

Following this, the ATU activated a new dedicated bus lane on Abancay Avenue in the Historic Center, utilizing physical segregation and new signaling to reduce bus travel times from approximately 25 minutes to between 8 and 11 minutes. Concurrently, construction on Metro Line 2 progressed, leading to the partial removal of an enclosure for a ventilation shaft and the subsequent reopening of a 110-meter section of Avenida Arica in Breña.
