Lithuania AM category driving license reform

Overview

Lithuania is set to implement new requirements for the AM category driving license, which permits the operation of mopeds and light quadricycles, effective November 1.

Under the new regulations, the minimum age for applicants will increase from 15 to 16 years old. Additionally, candidates will be required to pass both a theoretical and a practical driving exam, whereas previously only a theory exam was necessary. These changes, managed by Regitra, aim to improve road safety by addressing the lack of practical experience among young drivers.

The announcement has generated mixed public reactions. While some support the measures, others have raised concerns regarding whether 16-year-olds possess sufficient skills to navigate heavy traffic safely.
