Lithuanian graduate health insurance obligations

In Lithuania, graduates finishing high school or university face changes to their compulsory health insurance (PSD) obligations starting in September. While the state provides coverage for these individuals through the end of August, responsibility for insurance shifts based on their subsequent status.

Students enrolled in continuous study programs in Lithuania remain covered by the state. However, individuals who are not employed, not covered by the state, and not currently studying must pay monthly minimum PSD contributions independently to maintain access to subsidized medicines and healthcare services. Failure to manage these payments can lead to accumulated debt.

As the new academic year approaches, higher education enrollment shows significant activity, with 21,718 first-year students having signed study contracts. Amidst these academic transitions, experts emphasize that young people finishing studies must ensure their PSD is maintained, particularly those entering the workforce or traveling abroad, to avoid incurring debt.
