Lithuanian labor market trends

Overview

As of August 1, Lithuania's unemployment rate rose to 8%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous month. While unemployment grew in 39 municipalities, the number of job seekers remained lower than during the same period last year.

The labor market has shown signs of a mid-summer slowdown, yet vacancy levels have remained stable, exceeding 15,000 for five consecutive months. Demand for workers is particularly concentrated in the manufacturing, administration, service, trade, and construction sectors.

Despite the slight increase in unemployment, the average gross monthly salary for newly advertised positions reached €1,735, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year. Employment Service analyst Jurgita Zemblytė noted, “We see more signs of slowdown than weakening, but the overall direction remains favourable.”

Data for the second quarter of 2026 indicates that average wages continued to rise, with the average monthly gross salary reaching €2,628.2, a 2.9% increase from the first quarter. This represents a 10.1% increase on an annual basis compared to Q2 2025. Growth was more pronounced in the public sector, where the average gross salary reached €2,819.1, a 4.6% quarterly increase. The real wage index stood at 103.4%, suggesting wage growth has outpaced inflation. The highest quarterly growth rates were observed in agriculture, forestry, and fishing (7.8%), water supply and waste management (6.9%), and mining (5.4%).
